Starting this season, the Milwaukee Admirals will have a new radio home. On Thursday, iHeartMedia Milwaukee’s The Big 920 announced a broadcast partnership with the Admirals, taking over the rights Sports Radio 1250 WSSP held since 2007.
All 76 of the team’s American Hockey League regular-season games in 2018-19, as well as any Calder Cup Playoff contests, will air live on The Big 920, online at thebig920.com or other local iHeartRadio stations in the Milwaukee market. In addition, according to a news release from the company, all games will be available on the iHeartRadio app, allowing fans around the world to listen live to Admirals games.
"We couldn’t be more excited to welcome the Admirals to The Big 920 and the iHeartMedia Milwaukee family," Colleen Valkoun, market president for iHeartMedia Milwaukee, said in a statement. "The Admirals provide major-league entertainment in a fun minor-league atmosphere. Their fans are loyal and passionate, and we look forward to connecting with the team and its marketing partners on multiple stations and platforms."
The broadcasts will begin with a 30-minute pregame show, featuring a preview of the night’s contest and in-depth interviews with coaches and players, hosted by Aaron Sims, the longtime voice of the team. Additionally, Milwaukee Admirals Center Ice, a one-hour local radio show dedicated to hockey that was previously carried by Sports Radio 1250 WSSP, will air on Monday nights from 6 to 7 p.m. on The Big 920, one of six iHeartMedia Milwaukee properties.
"We’re proud to bring Admirals hockey to a new radio home on The Big 920," said Admirals Owner/CEO Harris Turer. "With the fantastic Aaron Sims continuing to call the action and all of the enhancements that our new partners at iHeartRadio will bring, Admirals hockey on the radio will be entering a powerful new age."
The Admirals’ home opener is set for Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. at UWM Panther Arena, with the rest of the schedule to be released later this summer. For more information and tickets, click here.
Born in Milwaukee but a product of Shorewood High School (go ‘Hounds!) and Northwestern University (go ‘Cats!), Jimmy never knew the schoolboy bliss of cheering for a winning football, basketball or baseball team. So he ditched being a fan in order to cover sports professionally - occasionally objectively, always passionately. He's lived in Chicago, New York and Dallas, but now resides again in his beloved Brew City and is an ardent attacker of the notorious Milwaukee Inferiority Complex.
After interning at print publications like Birds and Blooms (official motto: "America's #1 backyard birding and gardening magazine!"), Sports Illustrated (unofficial motto: "Subscribe and save up to 90% off the cover price!") and The Dallas Morning News (a newspaper!), Jimmy worked for web outlets like CBSSports.com, where he was a Packers beat reporter, and FOX Sports Wisconsin, where he managed digital content. He's a proponent and frequent user of em dashes, parenthetical asides, descriptive appositives and, really, anything that makes his sentences longer and more needlessly complex.
Jimmy appreciates references to late '90s Brewers and Bucks players and is the curator of the unofficial John Jaha Hall of Fame. He also enjoys running, biking and soccer, but isn't too annoying about them. He writes about sports - both mainstream and unconventional - and non-sports, including history, music, food, art and even golf (just kidding!), and welcomes reader suggestions for off-the-beaten-path story ideas.
