If Bitch Creek's music is a lake, the dynamic between band members is the tributary. In other words, the friendship and love within this five-member group is the impetus for the songs they create.
Bitch Creek is made up of Liv Weiss (lead vocals/ lead guitar), Gigi Kliesmet (vocals/ rhythm guitar), Molly Korinek (fiddle), Helena Rose (fiddle), and Helen Bozic (upright bass). The band released a single, "Animal," and have a full EP in the works.
OnMilwaukee recently had the chance to ask Weiss a few Qs about where they came from and where they're going.
OnMilwaukee: What’s the origin story of the band coming together?
Liv Weiss: The story of how we met and formed is one of our favorite things to talk about! I was bartending at Corazon in early 2024, and met Gigi’s dad, who was a regular, which eventually led to me meeting Gigi. Before we even hung out for the first time, Gigi had told me that she and Helena were seeing Adrianne Lenker play in Ireland in a few months and had a spare set of tickets. I knew immediately we were all a perfect fit. We committed to joining them on that journey pretty much overnight, and went on the trip to Ireland together after only knowing each other for three months. We bonded over shared music interests and pretty much instantly clicked when we played together for the first time.
We were lucky enough to meet Helen in early 2025 after trying to manifest an upright bass player. That was a cosmic connection too because we knew bass was the glue that we needed for a fully developed sound and Helen fit the groove perfectly.
How would you describe your music?
Our music is hard to nail in a few words. I think it swims between the lines of dark folk string music with timeless traditional influences, but also feels contemporary and new in the lyrical sense. Our music is queer in the way that it’s hard to box in. We experiment with heavier and lighter dynamics. We don’t want to confine ourselves to any firm genre because we are always feeling out new sounds.
What is the internal dynamic of your band?
Our dynamic is intense, deep, and love-centered. I think the strong relationship we all have with one another definitely impacts our charm on stage. It feels really special to make music with people you love so, so much. We spend a lot of time together so our music is almost like a language only we know that we communicate with. And it's special too, as we have developed as a band, our roles have fallen into place. Each one of us plays a part in the song writing process.
Tell me more about the song process?
I'm the lyricist, and I try to translate the way I see and experience the world into poetry. So it usually starts with words and a basic chord progression, then the band joins in and Molly and Helena play around with fiddle accompaniments, Helen lays down a beautiful bass line, and Gigi loves arranging songs, almost like a conductor. We all touch the song in our own way so it ends up being a culmination of all of us and it feels really satisfying when something beautiful comes together.
We just all want to have fun up there together and want our audience to feel like one of our friends. We’re very fresh to performing – we get more confident with every show but all of us still deal with our own nerves. I think when it comes to live performances we want it to truly reflect what it’s like to be in the room with us, as if we aren’t on the stage. Our goal is to always have a genuine connection with the audience and for people to really engage with the feeling and meanings inside the music.
Where can folks find your recorded music and see you perform live?
Our first release, "Animal," is available on Spotify, and Bandcamp, which is cooler because it directly supports musicians in real time. We are currently working on recording our first self-titled EP with our friend Jack Eycke at Pool Sounds that we are super excited to share with everyone. Be on the lookout for a release date before the end of the year.
Until then, you can catch us at one of our live shows around Milwaukee. We’ll be doing a free day show at Falcon Bowl during QWERTYFEST's Brunch & Bowl on Sunday Oct. 5 at noon, and Cactus Club on Saturday, Nov. 1, for the Ladybird album release show!
