Before the first pitch was thrown on Saturday night, the Milwaukee Brewers could celebrate. Going into the game against the St. Louis Cardinals, Milwaukee’s magic number was down to one in order to be the first team in the MLB to clinch a postseason spot. On Saturday, they wouldn’t even have to earn it (though they’ve done that all season.)
Earlier in the day, the New York Mets took on the Texas Rangers, losing their 8th straight game. That loss was enough to secure at the very least a Wild Card spot for the Brewers, who are looking like favorites to win the NL Central Division anyway with a six and a half game lead over the Chicago Cubs (who also lost on Saturday.) Milwaukee owes a thank you to Wyatt Langford of the Rangers, who broke a tie with two outs in the ninth inning on an RBI single to push Texas past the Mets for a 3-2 final.
With that said, the party could begin in Milwaukee on Saturday, where a big crowd was on hand at American Family Field between happy Brewers fans and well-traveling Cardinals supporters. A win would only make things better, but it didn’t look like that was in the cards (no pun intended) with St. Louis holding a 6-2 league through the 6th inning.
Then, of course, this Brewers team did something special again. Milwaukee rallied back and took things to extra innings, thanks to a three-run rally in the bottom of the 9th with big RBIs from Jackson Chourio and William Contreras. In extras, Milwaukee gave up a run with the bases loaded, but a big double play held St. Louis to just one run. Enter Caleb Durbin, who tied things back up with a single in the bottom of the 10th, and Andruw Monastario, who once again delivered a walk-off moment:
The Brewers won 9-8 in extra innings, thanks to their 11th walk-off hit of the season. This team simply does not know how to quit. The NL Central title is still very much the next goal, but on Saturday, getting the win and being the first team in baseball to punch their ticket to the postseason was more than enough cause for champagne.
After the game, manager Pat Murphy read a “letter from Bob Uecker” to the team (get your tissues ready.):
The franchise is postseason bound for the 11th time in its history, with the seventh playoff season in the last eight years. As of Sunday morning, the Brewers’ magic number to win the NL Central is 11, meaning that a combination of 11 Brewers wins and Cubs losses will secure the division title.
When can I get tickets?
2025 postseason tickets are not available yet, but we do know some dates reserved for a potential Brewers series. If they win the NL Central (fingers crossed), then the Divisional round of the playoffs begins on October 4th. If they do not, and have to play a Wild Card series, those games will be held on September 30th, October 1st and October 2nd. Stay tuned to the Brewers website for more information as it comes out next week.
