There’s something new on the way from Camp Bar owners Paul and Natalia Hackbarth, and it promises to capture all the cozy comforts of the classic Camp Bar experience, along with a slightly more refined, elegant package.
Campsite 131 is the name of the new venue, which will be located at 131 N. Jackson St., just south of the Third Ward location of Camp Bar.
Hackbarth describes the new bar as a sort of "spin-off" of the Camp Bar concept, a cozier version (just 2,000 square feet) with a rustic chic interior and a slightly more refined menu.
"Rustic chic is the way I’ve been describing it," he says. "We’re going a little bit more upscale, but without any of the pretense."
Hackbarth says that the concept was born from both the success of Camp Bar, as well as the desire to fill another void in the neighborhood.
"Camp Third Ward has become a tremendous success," he says. "It’s become this really great neighborhood bar, something which just didn’t exist before. The neighborhood has just been really good to us. So when the building owner approached me with the concept of doing a wine bar, I gave it some thought. There’s definitely a need for something like that in the neighborhood. But, in the end, I didn’t want to serve just wine. I wanted it to be the sort of place where everyone can find something to enjoy."
Adriana Ramirez, director of operations for the newly established Hackbarth Hospitality Group (encompassing Camp Bar, The Atrium, Sound by Design and Birch) says the concept really builds upon the spirit the brand has already established, while offering people a different sort of atmosphere.
"What makes Camp so special is the sense of community," she says. "People gather to watch games, to socialize. And this venue will still have that same feel with a slightly more upscale aesthetic. Where Camp Bar is darker in its finish, Campsite will have a lighter, more refined look and feel … think of it as glamping versus camping," she adds.
Campsite 131 will also feature a slightly different menu of offerings, expanding from Camp’s selection of cocktails, beer and tap wine to include a curated selection of bottled wine and craft beer.
"Wine is a personal passion of mine," Ramirez notes. "I’ve had the opportunity to travel across the country and the world, and I’ve observed firsthand how the wine scene has evolved. Wine bars are no longer these pretentious places; the whole attitude has gotten a lot more relaxed. "
And that’s the spirit in which the Campsite 131 wine list will be developed.
"It’s not going to be exhaustive," she says. "Instead, we’re looking at creating a well curated list that offers people the opportunity to explore some great new wines without feeling overwhelmed."
