"Evita," Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's beloved, award-winning musical chronicling the rise of Argentinian political leader Eva Peron, is coming to Milwaukee's Marcus Center for the Performing Arts Feb. 4-9.
The show – telling of Peron's rise from the slums of Argentina to First Lady – originally debuted in 1979 with Patti LuPone as the titular character and Mandy Patinkin as Che. Its original Broadway run came away with seven Tony awards in 1980, including Best Musical, and its signature number, "Don't Cry for Me Argentina," is arguably one of Broadway's most famous songs.
It was eventually adapted into a film in 1996, starring Madonna, Antonio Banderas and Jonathan Pryce. It wound up getting nominated for five Oscars, including a win for "You Must Love Me" for Best Original Song.
This particular touring production is based on 2012's Broadway revival, which starred Elena Roger and Ricky Martin. The revival was nominated for three Tony awards.
Tickets go on sale Sunday, Dec. 1 at noon, with prices starting at $30. For more information about the show and tickets, visit the Marcus Center's website.
