What started out as a single shelf of food for people in need has now turned into a community food sharing site called "Food Is Free." It's located on a parking slab in the alley at 56th and Townsend Streets in Sherman Park.
The pantry is located Emma Toth's backyard. Toth runs it with her partner, Samantha Jansen, with help from her 7-year-old daughter.
The pantry is open 24/7 for people to take or leave food. Toth is usually there daily between 6:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.
"We rely solely on a 'take what you need, give what you don’t' approach to stocking our food pantry, harvest-sharing shelf and community fridge," says Toth.
Food is Free is a worldwide movement growing community and food. The first Food is Free garden was planted in 2012 in Austin, Tex. and today there are more than 350 sites worldwide. Read more here.
