At first glance at the latest list of departures from the Big Red Streaming Monolith, it seems like, for most of March, Netflix subscribers will have some St. Patrick's Day luck with very little saying farewell. I doubt many people will be canceling their account over losing "Philomena" or "Safe Haven" – and I doubt even more that many people even know that a movied based on the old self-help book "The Secret" exists. Yay for March!

And then you get to reading the final day – always a killjoy but a particular massacre next month. BOO FOR MARCH!

Call it Netflix's Ides of March because the last day of the upcoming month will wipe out all sorts of favorites from the film site. Oscar players llike "Howards End," "As Good As It Gets" and "Braveheart" will last just long enough to see the 2022 ceremony, while the action blockbuster "300" will get stylishly sliced off the streaming service along with modern comedy classics like "The Hangover" and "I Love You, Man." An avalanche of childrens' movies will also say goodbye – from the silly ("Good Burger") to the nostalgic ("Hook," "Gremlins") to the delightfully villainous ("Despicable Me") and the downright childhood-ruining ("Jumanji," "The NeverEnding Story").

But perhaps the most concerning content leaving Netflix soon is stuff you won't find on this, or last month's, list: The Marvel "Defenders" series – including "Jessica Jones," "Daredevil" and more – are all headed elsewhere, despite the fact that they're technically Netflix Originals. Since they're a co-production, Disney's taking them back – and sure, they'll likely pop up on Hulu or Disney+ soon after. But what about other Netflix Originals? Say, for instance, "Homemade," an anthology of short films made during quarantine by the likes of Paolo Sorrentino, Kristen Stewart, Pablo Larrain and more. It arrived as a "Netflix Original" in 2020 but is now nowhere to be found on the streaming service – or anywhere for that matter, according to JustWatch.

Spring may be on approach, but for Netflix and for the long-gestating question of what happens to streaming originals with no physical copy and no guarantees, winter is coming.

And on that cheerful note, here are the movies and TV shows leaving Netflix in March!

As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.

When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
