After the success of the online business and numerous pop-up events, Maranta Plant Shop will open a permanent location on Wednesday, April 14 – 414 Day – at 1739 N. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

This is Milwaukee’s first and only Black- and Brown-owned plant shop.

On opening day, Maranta will offer 30 percent off all houseplants and the first 25 customers will receive a free plant. The hours will be from noon to 6 p.m.

Maranta offers a highly curated selection of plants, from healthy, everyday houseplants to rare types such as Philodendron Weeks Red Hybrid, Licuala Grandis, Monstera Pinnapartita, Alocasia Black Velvet and more.

The shop was founded by Milwaukee natives Michelle Alfaro and Mag Rodriguez. Alfaro is a plant lover and herb enthusiast with five years of experience with indoor plant care and alternative medicine. Rodriguez is a local entrepreneur who currently leads the Gener8tor music program as the Managing Director.

“We hope Maranta will add to Bronzeville’s growing and thriving black community which carries such a rich history,” said Alfaro. "The abundance of love from Milwaukee has only motivated us to keep building on our mission."
