The past year was ... peculiar for Netflix.

The streaming service had some massive hits ("Dahmer," "Stranger Things," "Inventing Anna") but also took some massive hits as its stock took a dive, its subscriber numbers stagnated, its decision-making was deeply questioned (ask "Glass Onion") and the entertainment bubble it started looks like it's ready to pop. Because, as it turns out, spending billions of dollars on new content and offering billions of dollars of old content while removing ways to actually monetize it isn't a functional business strategy. And turns out expecting subscriber and viewership growth to stay the same as when everyone was stuck at home with nothing else to do is comically ill-advised! We're learned a lot here today.

But hey, at least they've got some new movies and TV shows coming to the service in January!

Indeed, I hope your New Year's resolution is to watch more stuff, because the Big Red Streaming Monolith will have plenty to offer to start 2023 – including a bunch of originals such as the new sitcom spin-off "That '90s Show," a new season of "Ginny & Georgia," the Christian Bale-led mystery "The Pale Blue Eye" and a modern take on "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" called "You People" starring Eddie Murphy and Jonah Hill.

Admittedly it's a fairly light slate of originals, but the real impressive selections – in a rarity these days – is the outside material filling up Netflix's library. Suit up, gentleminions, because "The Rise of Gru" will make its way to streaming in January – and speaking of summer blockbusters, while the smash "Top Gun: Maverick" has now landed on Paramount+, the sky-high original Tom Cruise hit will arrive on Netflix to start the year. Looking for some more throwback classics? Keep your eyes out next month for "Grease," "Fletch," the Eddie Murphy "Nutty Professor" films, "Reservoir Dogs," "Forrest Gump" and all five original "Rocky" movies as well.

As for more recent blockbusters, "King Kong" will roar onto the streaming service along with the Spielberg modern great "Minority Report" and the jump-worthy original "Conjuring." And considering it's awards season, Netflix has your Oscar marathons set with past notable nominees like "The Aviator," "Brokeback Mountain," "Closer," "Jerry Maguire" and "Road to Perdition." Plus, if you're a Milwaukee Film Festival fan, you might recognize this past year's opening night feature – the whimsical true crime tale "The Pez Outlaw" – amongst next month's offerings.

Matt Mueller Culture Editor

As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.

When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
