2023 is almost ready to turn into 2024 – but the last digit isn't the only thing getting an addition, as Netflix recently announced its first batch of new arrivals for the new year.

As for Originals, for all their brave talk about being totally braced for the effects of the writers and actors strikes, the Big Red Streaming Monolith sure seems a little low on stock. There's not a lot of showcase selections to start the year, headlined by the Uruguayan plane crash survival drama "Society of the Snow," a new "Queer Eye" season (the last with cast member Bobby Berk), the star-studded heist flick "Lift" and "Good Grief," the film debut for "Schitt's Creek" captain Dan Levy.

Instead, the stars are mostly on the acquisition side of things this January for Netflix, from blockbuster frontmen like Aquaman and John Wick, to animated hits like "The Croods" and "How to Train Your Dragon," to thrilling technical achievements including "Gravity" and "Jurassic Park," and terrors like "Annabelle," "Dawn of the Dead" and "Train to Busan" – just in case entering an election year wasn't horrifying enough. And speaking of horrors ...

Holy Macavity, it's the feline film nightmare "Cats"! (Not the butthole cut.) I thought I just hallucinated that in the weird period that was early 2020 – but no, it's real. And really bad. But if you want to watch CGI Reburmese Wilson sing with a chorus of humanoid cockroaches, do I have an oddly specific streaming recommendation for you!

As for movies with more intentional laughs, Netflix will chuckle up "Meet the Parents," "School of Rock" and "Mamma Mia" – as well as its shockingly entertaining and emotional sequel, "Here We Go Again." And for a new binge of an older favorite to start the new year, Netflix snagged all six seasons of NBC's time-hopping hit "This Is Us" – just be sure to watch alongside a box or two of Kleenex. And make sure the Crock-Pot's unplugged.

That's just the beginning of Netflix's year-beginning bunch – so here's the full list of movies and TV shows coming to the Big Red Streaming Monolith in January.

Matt Mueller Culture Editor

As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.

When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
