Movie theaters are reopening in large numbers this weekend – complete with new movies. But you know what else is still open for business these days? The pandemic! And while many theaters are doing their best to keep things as clean and safe as possible, being in a closed space with strangers who may or may not be keeping their masks on for hours at a time is understandably still a bridge too far for many people to cross in the time of COVID.

Luckily, there's still Netflix, which next month will continue to churn out new and old movies to keep you happily plopped on your living room couch.

As is the norm these days, the highlights mostly come from the Netflix Originals, where you'll find "Away," a new series about launching Hilary Swank into space; another season of "The Chef Show"; "Enola Holmes," a peppy period mystery film starring Eleven from "Stranger Things" as Sherlock's equally keen teen sister; a very intriguing new psychological horror film from the writer of "Anomalisa," "Adaptation" and "Eternal Sunshine"; "The Devil All the Time": a dramatic parade of Southern-fried accents starring a whole bunch of famous faces (Robert Pattinson, Riley Keough, Tom Holland and Sebastian Stan, to name a few); and "Ratched," a prequel about the infamous nurse from "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." Spoiler alert: She ends up being bad at her job.

There will also be some notable films from outside Netflix making (likely brief) stays on the streaming service, including the return of the "Back to the Future" trilogy as well as "Grease," "Magic Mike," "Anaconda," "Pineapple Express," "Wildlife" and "Midnight Special" – the final two you almost certainly missed in theaters, so amend that mistake.

Or at least fix it while you can because, as noted in my departures column, these rights agreements between studios are getting comically shorter and shorter by the month, so I look forward to writing half of these titles all over again in my "Leaving Netflix in October" article in just a few weeks.

Matt Mueller Culture Editor

As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.

When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
