PHOENIX -- A strained oblique muscle has effectively nixed outfielder Laynce Nix's chances of making the Brewers' opening day roster.
Nix, sidelined for two week, is unlikely to return to action before the Brewers leave Arizona at the end of the week. He likely will start the season on the big-league disabled list and embark on a minor-league rehab assignment when he's ready.
"I don't think Laynce is going to be able to play this week," manager Ned Yost said. "So, whatever comes with that..."
Nix hit some balls off a tee this weekend, but will need more time to be ready for game action.
The Brewers currently have a glut of outfielders. Tony Gwynn, Jr., is expected to be sent to Class AAA Nashville. That would leave Bill Hall, Geoff Jenkins, Corey Hart, Kevin Mench, Gabe Gross and Brady Clark in the running for spots.
