The Green Bay Packers open their 2024-25 season in São Paulo, Brazil on Friday night, and it’s a game that, frankly, just feels odd. It’s the first NFL regular season game to be played in South America, and only the 13th regular season game to be played on a Friday. With that said, we’ve got a few questions, and thankfully, the world has answers for us. Here’s what you need to know ahead of the season opener:

Why play this game on a Friday?

The short answer is, well, because they can. The NFL is subject to the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961, which is basically why we get to watch a full slate of college games on Saturdays and Sundays are for the pros. The act stated that the NFL cannot broadcast a Friday or Saturday night game from the second weekend in September until the second weekend in December. That’s also why there are random Saturday night games towards the end of the season in prime time. With Labor Day landing on September 2nd, that makes this weekend fair game. From a logistical standpoint, playing the game on Friday outside of the country also would help to get both teams and all of that equipment back up to the United States without having the teams take a Week 2 bye week, as well.

Haven’t there been Friday games recently?

Exceptions to that broadcasting rule do occur. The NFL gets to host games on the holidays, so when Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, or New Year’s Eve falls on a Friday, there is football on TV. The league also hosted their first Black Friday game last year between the Dolphins and Jets, and they’ll do it again with the Chiefs and Raiders this year. It will likely be an annual tradition for the league going forward. Hurricane Wilma also forced the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs to play a Friday game in 2005.

Is the color green really banned in the stadium?

This was a social media rumor that was floating around before Friday night’s game. Tonight’s game takes place at Arena Corinthians, home to Corinthians F.C. in Brazil’s Série A, the top flight of the Brazilian soccer pyramid. The club has a rivalry with Palmieras, a club that predominantly features green in their regular kit. So while it feels a little sacrilegious to wear green inside the stadium, the Packers will have their regular green jerseys.

The Eagles, however, will be wearing black and white, removing the green flourishes from their jerseys for this game. While Brazil is a neutral site, Philadelphia will be considered the home team on Friday. It’s customary in the NFL for the home team to get the first say as to what jerseys they’ll wear, so the Eagles opted for black and white. An AP report also noted that a memo from Corinthians told the teams that only the visitors can wear green, as well.
