Welcome to Saturday Scorecard. With a Prince flexing (after last night's game-winning hit), footballs in the air (Packers Family Night Scrimmage), the PGA Championship looming and a story about a certain quarterback's "sexting" creating tidal waves at the water cooler, it's almost difficult to focus on what is important this week.

Cream puffs and pig races, of course.

Grab a flavored milk and enjoy these half-baked observations from Scorecard Central. DRIVING FORCE: The Packers' decision to sign veteran wide receiver Donald Driver to a two-year contract this week casts a splendid contrast to what is happening elsewhere in the league.

Green Bay general manager Ted Thompson has been criticized for not spending money on free agents. While Albert Haynesworth avoided passing a conditioning test for the second consecutive week, the Packers wrapped up Driver -- a homegrown player and model citizen in every sense of the word.

Now, Thompson eventually could end up getting stung for signing a 35-year-old receiver. But isn't, Driver -- who seems ageless this summer after another knee surgery -- worth the risk? A seventh-round pick out of Alcorn State in 1999, Driver needs 607 yards this year to surpass the team record held by Hall of Famer James Lofton. He's caught a pass in 127 straight games. He's had six straight 1,000-yard seasons.

If this signing goes bad, which seems unlikely, Thompson probably deserves a pass. Driver is a guy who does a lot in the community and has embraced everything about playing in Green Bay. He wants to be a "Packer for life" and the team is wise to let him move toward that goal.

In short, he's a better risk than a lot of the seemingly sure things on the free agent market.

MUCH ADO? The Brett Favre-Jenn Sterger "sexting" case that played out via the pages of Deadspin.com has prompted a great deal of navel gazing in journalism circles. It always happens when an online or "outside the mainstream" outlet breaks news (Drudge with Monica, TMZ with Tiger's harem and the Enquirer with John Edwards sleaze).

In a way, the story about the story could end up being bigger than the story.

There is danger in each of these cases. Remember when someone called "Badger Blogger" reported that Ned Yost was going to be fired? Deadspin is a gossip site. They run a lot of rumors. The mainstream media picks what will get further investigation.

Without cooperation from Sterger, who in a way is as victimized as Favre, Deadspin didn't report the story with enough teeth for it to get a lot of run from traditional outlets. That's fine. There are plenty of spots on the Web to pick up the slack in such cases. That's one of the benefits of having a huge marketplace of ideas. Consumers can be their own gatekeepers.

IRON IN THE FIRE: After losing three of four games in June, things looked bleak for the Iron. Coach Bob Landsee and the troops turned things around, though, and will host Chicago in a playoff game tonight at U.S. Cellular Arena. (The Bradley Center is unavailable while a new scoreboard is installed). Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

STILL SWINGING: Say what you will about the Brewers' disappointing season, you have to be impressed by their reluctance to throw in the towel during games like last night.

It would have been plenty easy to shut things down in the ninth inning against a tough closer (Matt Lindstrom) -- even after Joe Inglett's homer closed the gap to within a run.

The raw emotion that the Brewers showed afterward, particularly by Prince Fielder, showed that the players still care. That's a positive reflection on them as well as Ken Macha and his coaching staff. Is that enough to keep Macha around next season? Probably not. If he does exit, he deserves kudos for creating the environment that leads to moments like last night.

LARRY KING LOUNGE
Hindsight is always 20-20, but you could almost sense that the Brewers were going to do something special in the ninth inning last night. You just felt like they weren't finished after Joe Inglett's homer clanged off the foul pole... Why is it called a foul pole if balls that hit it are ruled fair?... The victory by the Brewers last night was the kind that sustain playoff teams throughout the regular season. Too bad we haven't seen more of those... Lorenzo Cain will be the Brewers' starting centerfielder next year. Book it. But, he's going to go through some growing pains.... Are you ready for your fantasy draft? Because I'm not... Wisconsin ranked 12th in the pre-season coaches poll. This is a big year for Bret Bielema and the boys... It's not an original, but I like it: "Sterger" spelled backward is "R-E-G-R-E-T-S."... Atari Bigby's ankle surgery will put Morgan Burnett in the spotlight. He may seem ready now, but things could change in Week 1... Tiger Woods hasn't done much this weekend to help ticket sales at Whistling Straits, has he?... How many PGA players will stop at Erin Hills to check things out before heading up to Haven?... Raise your hand if you thought Randy Wolf would make his start tonight for the Brewers... I didn't think so, either... I'm looking forward to seeing Daron Sutton visit Milwaukee this week with the D-Backs. The guy always gets very emotional upon returning to Cheeseville, be it for baseball or a Milwaukee Panthers game. Then again, D-Sutt gets emotional when the Diamondbacks lose. He and Mark Grace are worth the price of the "Extra Innings" package... I'm hearing nothing but good things about Marquette's summer basketball workouts. With all the turnover on the roster, the Golden Eagles are going to need to come together in a hurry... Thumbs up to the Admirals for their new black road jersey. That logo that was so controversial a few years back has aged well, don't you think?... Some still blame him for the early-season woes, but Trevor Hoffman has been a class act this season for the Brewers. And, he's pitched brilliantly the last several weeks... With David Ortiz and Mike Lowell entering option years, you have to think that the Red Sox may be a competitor in the Prince Fielder sweepstakes. Having Mike Cameron and Bill Hall on hand to lobby for the big fella won't hurt... I'll be watching Mason Crosby pretty closely tonight. Him and Burnett... If anybody has extra Italian Sausage bobbleheads after this weekend, send them my way. I want to cover Bobby Tanzilo's desk with them.
