Hot after proclaiming J. Cole as one of its headlining acts yesterday, Summerfest kept the announcement car running, revealing this morning that Arcade Fire (along with a special guest to be announced) will serve as the Big Gig's closing night headliner on Sunday, July 8.
The show marks the Canadian indie rock band's first visit to Milwaukee since 2004, when the group played a slightly smaller venue – The Mad Planet – while supporting its breakout debut studio album, "Funeral."
Since then, the six-piece band has only gotten more and more popular, scoring several hits including "Wake Up," "Keep the Car Running," "We Used to Wait" and "No Cars Go" as well as earning several Grammy nominations – including one win in 2011 for Album of the Year for "The Suburbs," triumphing over the likes of Lady Gaga, Eminem and Katy Perry. The band also earned an Oscar nomination in 2014 for its score to Spike Jonze's Best Picture-nominated lo-fi sci-fi romance "Her."
The band's most recent album, "Everything Now" – released last July – marked its third record to chart number one on the Billboard 200. For a sneak peak of what to expect this summer, tune in to "Saturday Night Live" on March 17, as Arcade Fire will serve as the musical guest for the Bill Hader-hosted episode.
Tickets for the show will go on sale starting Friday, March 9, at noon. Tickets can be purchased online at both Summerfest's website and Ticketmaster, as well as in person at the Summerfest box office, Ticketmaster ticket centers and select Walmart stores, and over the phone at either (800) 745-3000 (for a live Ticketmaster agent) or (866) 448-7849 (for the Ticketmaster Express automated phone line).
This morning's announcement now leaves just one more American Family Insurance Amphitheater headlining act left to announce. Any guesses?
