A new beer garden and taproom could be coming to the northwest side.
Last week, Thirsty Fox Beverage Company applied to the City of Milwaukee for a liquor license for a space at 5840 N. 60th St. that had previously been occupied by Pereles Bros. custom injection molding company.
The Havenwoods Taproom and Beer Garden would occupy the northwest corner of the building and an L-shaped beer garden would run 250 feet along the north side of the building.
A parking lot is included in the plan.
A floor plan of the 1,500-square-foot taproom shows a bar with 11 stools, two banquettes, three four-top tables, a couple high-top tables and bar seating running along the the wall opposite the serving bar.
The application notes that Havenwoods – named for its neighborhood, which in turn is named for the only urban state forest in Wisconsin, which is located nearby – would host live music and DJs and would offer music outdoors on weekends.
According to a 2022 BizTimes article written by Ashley Smart, the project could unfold in phases and include a dog park and, later, a brewing facility and trails for walking and mountain biking.
Smart also reported that the beer garden – which would also sell wine and kombucha – would include a bar made from a shipping container.
The July 21 application did not reference any of these potential features.
The taproom has no links to the New Jersey-based Thirsty Fox Brewing; to Thirsty Fox cidery, founded in Massachusetts and based in India; or to the Thirsty Fox tavern, which is also located on the northwest side.
However, Smart noted that, “the tenant is not a local, but is an established brewery that has been wanting to move into Milwaukee for a while.”
The applicant was filed by Cedarburg resident Chase Jaffray.
The city’s licenses committee will take up the application at a future meeting.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he lived until he was 17, Bobby received his BA-Mass Communications from UWM in 1989 and has lived in Walker's Point, Bay View, Enderis Park, South Milwaukee and on the East Side.
He has published three non-fiction books in Italy – including one about an event in Milwaukee history, which was published in the U.S. in autumn 2010. Four more books, all about Milwaukee, have been published by The History Press.
With his most recent band, The Yell Leaders, Bobby released four LPs and had a songs featured in episodes of TV's "Party of Five" and "Dawson's Creek," and films in Japan, South America and the U.S. The Yell Leaders were named the best unsigned band in their region by VH-1 as part of its Rock Across America 1998 Tour. Most recently, the band contributed tracks to a UK vinyl/CD tribute to the Redskins and collaborated on a track with Italian novelist Enrico Remmert.
He's produced three installments of the "OMCD" series of local music compilations for OnMilwaukee.com and in 2007 produced a CD of Italian music and poetry.
In 2005, he was awarded the City of Asti's (Italy) Journalism Prize for his work focusing on that area. He has also won awards from the Milwaukee Press Club.
He has be heard on 88Nine Radio Milwaukee talking about his "Urban Spelunking" series of stories, in that station's most popular podcast.
