The Brewers acquired veteran third baseman David Bell Friday night in exchange for minor-league pitcher Wilfrido Laureano.
Bell, 33, has two months left in a four-year, $17 million contract he signed with the Phillies. Bell was hitless in four at-bats during a 4-1 loss to Florida on Friday night. He is batting .278 with six homers and 34 RBI.
Bell is the son of former major-league player Buddy Bell, who is currently the manager of the Kansas City Royals, and the grandson of Gus Bell, who played in the major leagues with several teams, including the Milwaukee Braves (1962-'64).
In order to clear a roster spot for Bell, the Brewers likely will place second baseman Rickie Weeks on the 15-day disabled list. Weeks has been sidelined a few days with an injured tendon in his right wrist, an injury that apparently occured when he was waggling a bat while sitting in the dugout. The Brewers, strapped for depth in the infield with J.J. Hardy out for the season and Corey Koskie out indefinitely with post-concussion syndrome, picked up Tony Graffanino from Kansas City for lefty Jorge De La Rosa earlier in the week.
Laureano was 3-2 with a 4.10 earned run average in 29 games for the Class A West Virginia Power.
