The Milwaukee Brewers etched their names into franchise history Saturday night, capturing their record-breaking 14th consecutive victory with a dramatic 6-5, 11-inning win over the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park.
What started as a potential heartbreaking loss transformed into one of the most memorable wins of the Brewers' historic streak. Down to their final out in the top of the ninth inning, Milwaukee's streak appeared on the brink when Cincinnati shortstop Elly De La Cruz committed a crucial throwing error that allowed the tying run to score, sending the game into extra innings.
In the tenth inning, another defensive miscue – this time a bobbled ball by Reds left fielder Jake Fraley and a possible injury to boot – proved costly as Milwaukee's automatic runner Anthony Siegler crossed the plate to give the Brewers the lead.
In the top of the 11th, we got another big moment in this year's Brewers season. Pinch hitter Andruw Monastario, looking for his first home run of the year, delivered in the clutch with a towering three-run blast to the left field seats that sent the Milwaukee dugout into celebration. The dramatic swing gave the Brewers a commanding 6-3 advantage and provided the cushion they would ultimately need.
Cincinnati mounted one final rally in the bottom of the eleventh, with a run scoring and then Noelvi Marte connecting on a home run that made things interesting. But Brewers reliever Nick Mears, despite allowing the two runs, managed to secure the save and preserved the historic victory.
The win extends Milwaukee's incredible run, and only adds to the storylines of this season; one now filled with wins, free burgers, Pocket Pancakes, and the Power of Friendship.
The Brewers and Reds will conclude their series Sunday afternoon in Cincinnati before Milwaukee returns home to American Family Field to welcome the Chicago Cubs for what promises to be another exciting series. With momentum firmly on their side, the Brewers will look to extend their record-setting streak as well as their lead on Chicago in the NL Central.
Let's. Go. Brewers!
