The Brewers have signed outfielder Gabe Kapler to a one-year contract.

"Gabe brings versatility and athleticism to the outfield position," general manager Doug Melvin said in a press release. "He has always been a great teammate and possesses the determination to bounce back and become a valuable player to our club."

Kapler, 32, resumes his playing career after spending the 2007 season as the manager of the Greenville Drive, the Class A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. He has played nine Major League seasons with Detroit (1998-‘99), Texas (2000-‘02), Colorado (2002-‘03) and Boston (2003-‘06). He has a .270 career batting average with 64 home runs and 302 RBI in 850 games.

Coincidentally, the announcement was made on the day that the Phillies announced a two-year contract with former Brewers outfielder Geoff Jenkins.
