Recently, Hangout MKE – an "activity cafe" at 1819 N. Farwell Ave. that encourages human interaction through oversized versions of classic games like pool, Scrabble, foosball and more – launched a new waffle bar inside its space.

The menu includes seven types of dessert waffles: cookies and cream, snickerdoodle, Nutella deluxe, salty sweet, cookie crunch, strawberries and cream, and s'mores. The sweet breakfast items come two to a plate and cost $4.75.

"We make the waffles fresh every morning in a Belgian waffle maker," says Hangout MKE supervisor, Amber Thomas. "Chocolate lovers will particularly like the waffles, but we also have a strawberry and cream waffle that's really good."

During a recent visit, my family tried them all and found them decadent, filling and delicious. The waffles are spongy yet slightly crispy and the toppings are generous. Because of their sweetness, the breakfast cakes pair well with the rich, sharp and slightly-bitter taste of Anodyne coffee, also available at Hangout MKE.

"Hangout MKE is a unique place where you can chill or play games, have coffee or have cocktails – whatever you feel like," says Thomas. "And now we have a waffle bar which is pretty unique, too."

We enjoyed the sweet and salty waffle the most, followed by the Nutella deluxe. Although they aren't something we'd eat every day, we'd definitely eat them again.

After the waffle feast, we played a game of foosball and determined it a successful Saturday morning family adventure that was something different from the usual.

Meghan Staszak and Becca Riddle opened Hangout MKE this summer. The women, who are partners in both life and business, wanted to offer an interactive social space – that wasn't a bar – for Milwaukeeans of all ages.

"It doesn't matter if you drink alcohol or don't drink alcohol. This is just a fun place to chill, play games and enjoy beverages, snacks and waffles," says Staszak.
