It took a little while, but how Ron Roenicke plans to use his new-look bullpen has started to become clear.

John Axford earned the saves – his 24th and 25th, respectively – in both of the Brewers' victories at Colorado. Francisco Rodriguez set up both of those saves and earned the victory, his first as a Brewer, Saturday with a scoreless eighth inning.

"That's the Frankie I'm used to seeing," said Roenicke, who worked with Rodriguez when he was a coach for the Angels.

Roenicke said that both Axford and Rodriguez would see ninth-inning work, but throughout the last week, the Brewers' manager and general manager Doug Melvin have said that in no way does Rodriguez's arrival mean Axford was out of a job.

"I'm not going to make it into a bigger deal than it is," Axford said. "I'm not going to try to overblow it. If I come into the game in the eighth inning, I'll go out and try to get three outs and get the job done. That's what we're supposed to do."

Considering the Brewers are second in baseball with 22 one-run victories, it stands to reason that Roenicke will need to use both pitchers to close out games.

"I think sometimes we'll look at what the match-ups are," Roenicke said. "Sometimes we'll look at what guys have done against them in the past, match that up a little better. I know it's more work for me figuring out who to put in. But I just look at it like we added a great piece to our bullpen.

"Whether it's the eighth or ninth inning, whoever it's going to be, we're real happy to have Frankie here."

Braun questionable: No word yet if Ryan Braun will return to the lineup tonight when the Brewers open a four-game series in Arizona. The left fielder left the game early Saturday and was out of the lineup Sunday due to soreness in his left calf – the same issue which held him out of the final few games of the first half.

Roenicke, Braun and the training staff are trying to be cautious with the injury in the hopes of keeping Braun off the disabled list.

"I think it could come to that, but I'm hoping it doesn't," Roenicke told reporters Sunday. "I'm hoping the time he had off before the break helped heal up that area. Right now, I'm hoping we're just kind of day to day and hopefully it just continues to get better and we don't get to the point where we need to back him off for a couple weeks."

Marcum is OK: The Brewers had a bit of a minor scare Sunday when starting pitcher Shaun Marcum left the game Saturday with soreness in his neck.

On Sunday, Marcum told reporters that he was OK, suffering still from a bit of stiffness but doesn't expect to miss his next start, scheduled for Friday in San Francisco.

The injury happened in the fifth inning Saturday, when he dove to make a play on Dexter Fowler's bunt. Marcum still picked up the victory Saturday, improving to 8-3 on the year.

"I think I landed a little awkward," Marcum told reporters. "It's a little stiff right now, but I don't think it's anything to be too alarmed about. Keep doing our treatment, and be ready to go next time out."

Back to Phoenix: Less than a week after earning MVP honors at the All-Star Game in Phoenix, Prince Fielder will be back at Chase Field as the Brewers open a four-game set against the Diamondbacks.

How the Arizona fans react to Fielder's return remains to be seen. He was booed frequently during his time in Phoenix for leaving fan favorite Justin Upton off the National League's home run derby team.

Even after accepting his MVP award, there was a smattering of jeers coming from the stands though Fielder didn't take it personally.

"I understood," Fielder said after the All-Star Game. "I didn't take it too personally. I mean, I probably would have booed myself, too, if I was an Arizona fan. That just shows you how much Justin means to them."

Injury report: LHP Mitch Stetter, still working his way back from a hip injury, was moved from Rookie League Arizona to Class AAA Nashville. He began rehabilitation work on July 7.

Erik Komatsu went 3-for-4 with an RBI in Huntsville's 5-2 victory over Montgomery Sunday ... RHP Evan Anundsen threw 3.1 scoreless innings Sunday, allowing two hits with two strikeouts in Brevard County's 7-0 victory over Palm Beach.
