The Brewers claimed catcher Eric Munson off waivers from Houston this afternoon.
Munson, 30, played 50 games for the Astros last season and hit .235 with four homers and 15 RBI. A first-round pick of Detroit in 1999, Munson never lived up to his lofty draft status. He dabbled at first and third base, but returned behind the plate.
The Brewers haven't decided whether to retain catcher Johnny Estrada, who is under their control for next season, or Damian Miller, who is a free agent.
In order to clear a roster spot for Munson, the Brewers designated pitcher Mike Jones for assignment. Jones, a first-round pick in 2001, has been ravaged by injuries that forced him to miss most of the 2004, '05 and '07 seasons and is recovering from reconstructive elbow surgery.
